主题:Effects of Free School Meals in China Evidence from a Quasi-experimental Design
报告内容:By the end of 2015, public-funded school meal programmes in China covered approximately 46.8 million compulsory education students. Our study evaluates effects of free school meals on students’ physical wellbeing and school performance using difference-indifferences estimator with two-year panel data. We find that students who participated school meal programmes had been statistically different from their non-participant peers before intervention. By comparing changes in outcomes between the control and treatment groups that are statistically similar, we found that free school meals led to an increase of 0.15 s.d. in cognitive test scores and 0.09 s.d. in Chinese test scores within a year. No statistically significant effect of free school meals on students’ physical outcomes was detected. Neither was there any effect on mathematics and English test score.
