报告内容:We study the competition intensity on price discrimination in restaurant industry. We build a spoke model with both local and nonlocal competition to examine the competition effects on firm’s price discrimination strategy, and show that increasing number of competing firms enlarges the online and offline price differentials, contrary to the prediction by the conventional spatial competition model. Using a novel online date set, we show that competition leads to a higher tendency to engage in coupon issuance, and insignificant effect on the discount rate. Further, we shoe the competition effect is decreasing in quality, suggesting lower quality restaurants respond more to competition. Additionally, quality, number of reviews, distance to metro stations increases and being a chained business decreases the tendency.
