摘要:
This project attempts to examine the social impact of microfinance along various dimensions such as creation of social capital, health and welfare. The research is based on surveys of randomly sampled clients of a microfinance institution in India, namely Hindusthan Microfinance Pvt. Ltd. The participants are clients of Hindusthan Microfinance (HM). Specifically these clients are of a low socio-economic background and receive micro-loans from HM. The structure of loans is of a joint-liability type, whereby loans are given to groups of women rather than individuals and entail monthly meetings to repay the loans in instalments. In other words, Joint Liability Group is a group of people that form a group for the purpose of sharing the responsibility of repayment; group credit of this type is a common form of lending adopted by Microfinance institutions. We hypothesise that these monthly meetings with HM generate social capital through knowledge of group members and a sense of communal responsibility that is entailed by the structure of the loan. This is a relatively less understood impact of microfinance that the extant literature does not address very well. Insights from the research will help HM enhance these and other beneficial impacts on their clients.
